It may seem intolerable for they’re being any reason for workplace violence but in recent years current and former employees have become frustrated and angry enough to resort to violence. Conditions causing employee frustration and anger may stem from:
1) Lack of individual responsibility.
2) An unstable economy and widespread job layoffs.
3) A rigid authoritarian style of management and insensitive terminations.
4) Pressure for increased productivity.
5) Psychological instability.
These conditions may lead to stress, conflicts, and possible workplace violence. Obsessive love affairs and domestic disputes that spill over into the workplace may also cause violence.
Individuals can take action to prevent violence by knowing the warning signs, reporting any violent or potentially violent behavior, and learning to effectively deal with stress and conflicts. The clearest indicators that violence may follow are three types of threats.
1) Direct threats.
2) Veiled threats.
3) Conditional threats.
There are other signs that may accompany a threat from an individual who may be potentially violent. They may be usually argumentative, does not cooperate well with others, has a problem with authority figures, demonstrates extreme or bizarre behavior, frequently blames others for his or her problems, or frequently appears depressed. Keep in mind never stereotype individuals or make hasty judgments about someone.
Personal Safety Tips:
1) Report all threats or behaviors that you believe could lead to an outburst.
2) If a situation has gone beyond reporting and you’re well-being is threatened talk the person into calming down, empathize and sympathize. Ask the individual what you can do to help them, make sure they know you understand their position by re-stating what it is they are upset about. Focus on the behavior and not the person.
3) Always call for help when necessary.
Keep in mind that verbal threats are as much a form of violence as physical attacks. Do not ignore angry outbursts know what workplace stress and conflicts can cause a violent incident.
